**TL;DR:** Indian D2C brands should audit Merchant Center now for Google's new optional video-link field and the 500×500 minimum image resolution that begins enforcement on 31 January 2027. Prioritize active, high-revenue products; align landing-page, structured-data and feed values; replace undersized images; add useful product videos; then monitor diagnostics before scaling Shopping or Performance Max spend.

Indian D2C brands should audit Merchant Center now for Google's new optional video-link field and the 500×500 minimum image resolution that begins enforcement on 31 January 2027. Prioritize active, high-revenue products; align landing-page, structured-data and feed values; replace undersized images; add useful product videos; then monitor diagnostics before scaling Shopping or Performance Max spend.

Google's 2026 specification update creates a useful preparation window. The work is not simply to resize every image. The commercial job is to identify which products matter, ensure Google receives one consistent product identity, and remove the catalogue defects that constrain eligibility or send shoppers to an inconsistent landing page.

## What changed in Google's 2026 Merchant Center specification?

Google's [2026 product data specification update](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/16989427?hl=en) introduced two changes that matter immediately for catalogue operations:

- a new optional `video_link` attribute for product videos; and
- a future minimum image resolution of 500×500 pixels for both the primary `image_link` and `additional_image_link` attributes.

Google says warnings for undersized images began on 14 April 2026 and enforcement starts on **31 January 2027**. It may optimize some smaller images automatically, but that is not a dependable creative-quality strategy. A merchant should still supply an accurate, crawlable, high-quality image that represents the product without promotional text, watermarks, borders or placeholders.

The video field is optional. Treat it as an enrichment opportunity for products where motion answers a purchase question: drape for apparel, texture for beauty, assembly for furniture, scale for home decor, or operation for electronics.

## Which products should an Indian D2C team audit first?

Do not start with an alphabetical export. Rank the catalogue by commercial and policy risk.

| Priority | Product group | Why it comes first |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Active products earning most revenue or Shopping spend | A defect affects the largest current opportunity |
| 2 | Products with image, price, availability or identifier warnings | The issue already constrains eligibility or trust |
| 3 | Products with many variants | Size, colour and parent-child inconsistencies multiply quickly |
| 4 | New launches and seasonal inventory | The selling window is short |
| 5 | Long-tail active catalogue | Important after revenue-bearing risks are controlled |
| 6 | Archived, duplicate or permanently unavailable products | Remove or govern rather than polishing dead inventory |

For a Shopify catalogue, create one working table with product ID, item-group ID, variant, status, recent spend, recent net revenue, primary image dimensions, additional-image count, video availability, feed diagnostics and owner.

## What should the product image audit check?

Google's current [product data specification](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7052112?hl=en) requires a crawlable main image URL and says the image should accurately show the product. The 2026 update adds the future 500×500 minimum across product categories and marketing methods.

Check each priority SKU for:

1. **Resolution:** at least 500×500 before the enforcement date; preferably retain a higher-resolution original for zoom and reuse.
2. **Accuracy:** the submitted image matches the colour, material and variant on the landing page.
3. **Crawlability:** the image URL returns an accepted image format without authentication, robots blocking or an expiring token.
4. **Presentation:** no promotional overlays, watermarks, borders, generic placeholders or misleading staging in the primary image.
5. **Variant discipline:** variant images and item-group relationships do not collapse different products into one ambiguous record.
6. **Additional views:** useful angles, detail, scale and lifestyle context appear in additional images where available.
7. **AI disclosure:** AI-generated product images retain the metadata Google requires in its specification.

A technically compliant square image can still be commercially weak. Review whether the first image identifies the product clearly at mobile thumbnail size.

## How should brands use the new video-link attribute?

The new field does not mean every product needs an expensive campaign film. A useful product video should answer one high-friction question in a short, accurate format.

| Category | Useful video evidence | Avoid |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Apparel | fit, movement, fabric and size reference | a generic brand montage with no product detail |
| Beauty | texture, application and finish | unsupported efficacy claims |
| Furniture | scale, mechanism, assembly or storage | imagery that hides dimensions |
| Electronics | ports, setup and core operation | unavailable accessories shown as included |
| Food | pack size, preparation and serving context | nutrition or health claims not supported on the page |

Use a stable HTTPS URL, confirm that the merchant owns the marketing rights, and keep the product shown in the video consistent with the submitted variant. Then inspect Merchant Center's **Needs attention** area for processing issues. Video should enrich a correct product record, not compensate for missing required attributes.

## Why must the feed, landing page and structured data agree?

Google's [Product structured-data guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/product) recommends providing rich product information on the page and through Merchant Center. Using both can maximize eligibility and help Google understand and verify the data.

Audit the same fields across four surfaces:

| Field | Store record | Landing page | Product structured data | Merchant Center |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Product identity | stable SKU and parent grouping | visible product and variant | `sku`, `gtin` or group properties where valid | `id`, `gtin`, `mpn`, `item_group_id` |
| Price | current selling price | visible checkout-relevant price | `Offer.price` and currency | price and currency |
| Availability | inventory rule | accurate stock state | `Offer.availability` | availability |
| URL | canonical product/variant rule | self-consistent canonical | page URL context | link and optional canonical link |
| Media | governed asset library | correct product gallery | crawlable image references | image, additional image and video links |

Google's ecommerce site-structure guidance also says internal links help it understand page relationships and relative importance. Ensure category pages link to active products using crawlable anchors; do not rely only on a sitemap, internal search or client-side filters.

HML's [Shopify agentic storefront product-data guide](/blog/shopify-agentic-storefront-product-data-india-2026) explains the wider product-record problem. The [Merchant Center AI Performance Insights guide](/blog/google-merchant-center-ai-performance-insights-india-2026) shows how to separate Google's diagnostic summaries from actual commercial evidence.

## What does a practical audit score look like?

Consider a fictional Indian home-and-lifestyle brand with 4,800 submitted items. The figures below are synthetic and are not a benchmark.

| Audit stage | Items | Share of submitted catalogue |
| --- | ---: | ---: |
| Submitted items | 4,800 | 100% |
| Active and commercially relevant | 3,900 | 81.3% |
| Carrying an image-size warning | 620 | 12.9% |
| Warning items in the top revenue tier | 140 | 2.9% |
| Products where video resolves a known purchase question | 310 | 6.5% |
| Records with a feed/page price or availability mismatch | 76 | 1.6% |

**Method:** export active Merchant Center diagnostics; join them to a governed product ID; add 90-day spend, net revenue and contribution bands; sample landing pages and structured data; classify media issues; assign an owner and due date; then rerun diagnostics after the next successful data-source fetch. Do not infer sales lift from the number of resolved warnings.

The first sprint should fix the 140 high-revenue image warnings and 76 factual mismatches, not produce videos for all 4,800 items. The second sprint can enrich the 310 products where video has a specific decision-making role.

## How should the impact be measured?

Use separate layers so a cleaner feed is not mistaken for causal growth.

| Layer | Measures | What it can show |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Feed health | approved, limited, disapproved, warning count and data freshness | whether Google can process the record |
| Search visibility | impressions, product clicks, free-listing traffic and query coverage | whether eligible products are being surfaced |
| Paid delivery | spend, impression share, clicks and attributed value | how campaigns are delivering |
| Business outcome | net orders, new customers, margin and contribution | what the business recorded |
| Causal evidence | holdout or valid incrementality test | what likely changed because of the intervention |

Use the [ROAS Calculator](/tools/roas-calculator) to keep revenue efficiency explicit and the [ROAS glossary](/glossary/roas) to align definitions. Neither proves that a feed edit caused the result.

## What should the team do before January 2027?

Create a four-part operating plan:

- **Now:** export warnings, rank products, repair factual mismatches and replace undersized images for the revenue-bearing catalogue.
- **Next sprint:** add additional views and product videos where they answer a known purchase question.
- **Every release:** validate feed, page and structured-data agreement for price, availability, identity, variant and media.
- **Monthly:** report feed health, search visibility, paid delivery and net commercial outcomes as separate rows.

For context on matching campaign structure to commercial outcomes, review HML's [D2C furniture performance case study](/case-studies/performance-marketing-d2c-furniture-brand-roas). Its results are not used as evidence for the synthetic example above.

If the catalogue has material diagnostics, variant mismatches or high-spend products with weak media, request a [Merchant Center and Shopping audit](/contact) from HML's [performance marketing team](/performance-marketing). The deliverable should be a prioritized SKU-level repair plan, not a generic recommendation to “improve the feed.”

## Frequently Asked Questions

### When does Google's new 500×500 product image requirement take effect?

Google says enforcement begins on 31 January 2027. Merchant Center started issuing warnings from 14 April 2026 for images below the coming minimum. Brands should use the warning period to replace affected primary and additional images before they risk disapproval.

### Does every Merchant Center product need a video?

No. The video-link attribute is optional. Use it where a short first-party video clarifies fit, scale, texture, assembly or use better than static images. A missing video should not displace work on required identifiers, titles, landing pages, price, availability and primary images.

### Should Shopify data or the Merchant Center feed be treated as the source of truth?

Choose one governed product record and document how Shopify, the feed, landing-page structured data and Merchant Center are synchronized. The operational goal is agreement across surfaces. Conflicting price, availability, variant or identity values create avoidable diagnostics and can weaken Google's confidence in the product record.

### Will fixing product data automatically improve ROAS?

No. Better data can improve eligibility, matching and presentation, but ROAS also depends on demand, bidding, price, margin, creative, competition and measurement. Track feed-quality indicators separately from spend, orders, contribution and incremental lift.
